Fashion
Photography has been around since the year 1839. There always was a world of fashion,
but fashion photography didn't arrive until then. The invention of the halftone
printing process was very vital to fashion photography.
The
difference between fashion photography and portraiture is that, in portraiture,
the person, people featured in the image will be the subject, whereas, in
fashion photographs, its more about the exterior, whether it be headwear,
dresses, eyeliner, jeans and much more. Also, portraiture photographs are
generally not manipulated, whereas, with fashion photography, everything is
manipulated, like reshaped curves, bigger, brighter eyes, whiter teeth and a
face with no blemishes.
Portraiture is often used to express emotions, whereas
fashion photographs are used to show off fashion items. Although the same
equipment is used for both types of photography, there are different processes
of production. With portraiture, usually the picture is taken and then the job
is done and there is no need for additional wardrobes, whereas, with fashion
photography, there can be hours of preparation even before the picture is
taken, like setting up studio lights in the studio. Also there are processes
after, like digital manipulation and airbrushing.
Personally, I feel that
digital manipulation is more preferred rather than vital, otherwise the natural
appearance is completely destroyed. Also, the people modelling in the photos
are practically used as adjustable mannequins. Fashion photography is very controversial
as it portrays an unnatural atmosphere.
With fashion photography, I feel
photographers and the companies hiring them are very picky about who they
photograph, like tall, skinny and hourglass figure. Some companies have also
been in trouble due to their misuse of beauty product promotions, like an
advertisement was aired, which was advertising a mascara. It was later
discovered that the model used in this case, was in fact wearing false
eyelashes rather than the product.
